CfP: Nazi Camps in the Occupied Soviet Territories
The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, in association with Yahad–In Unum, the Université Paris-IV Sorbonne, and the École Normale Supérieure, is co-organizing a symposium on Nazi camps in the Soviet Union. This two-day gathering will take place in Paris, September 19–20, 2011, in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union.
World War II led to the deaths of at least 20 million people in the Soviet Union, many of whom died in Nazi camps. Nevertheless, the history and functions of these camps, as well as the staggering rates of deaths that took place in them, have been relatively ignored by scholars. This symposium will explore these issues and examine if our understanding of concentration and extermination camps in other Nazi-occupied territories is relevant to the Soviet experience. Topics of discussion will include
· Mass extermination in the Soviet territories
· Camps and genocides
· Camps for Soviet prisoners of war
· The administration of the camps
The organizing institutions will provide transportation and accommodations for attendees. Symposium sessions will be held in English, French, and Russian. The deadline for paper submissions is May 31, 2011. For more information, please visit www.holocaustbybullets.com/about-yahad-in-unum/nazi-camps-on-the-occupied-soviet-territories-symposium/
