Project Archivist

The Wiener Library

Full-time, 1 year post based in Central London, WC1

The Wiener Library is the world’s oldest Holocaust archive and the home of Britain’s largest collection of published and unpublished works, documents and photographs relating to the Nazi era.  We are seeking a qualified Archivist to join the Collections Team on a one year contract starting in April 2017 to catalogue the Wiener Library’s own organisational archive.

The Wiener Library has generated its own archive since its foundation in 1933. The task for the Project Archivist is to catalogue and make accessible to the public those papers from within the Wiener Library Archive which have enduring historical value. In particular the focus will be on the Library’s early years, when it was known as the Jewish Central Information Office and its primary function was that of an information gathering/disseminating bureau, through to the transition in the post-war era to that of a research library/archive.


Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Creating a detailed multi-level description of the material to ISAD(G) standard
  • Indexing the collection using an in-house thesaurus
  • Rearranging the archive in the new order as necessary
  • Noting any preservation needs
  • Drawing up a list of 50-70 items for dissemination purposes
  • Liaising with the Education and Outreach Team to plan dissemination activities
  • Writing regular blog posts documenting the archiving process
  • Providing regular progress reports
  • Managing and supervising volunteers


Person Specification


  • Graduate or post graduate degree in archive studies or equivalent experience
  • Experience with cataloguing to ISAD(G) standard
  • Fluency in German 
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to organise work effectively and prioritise tasks 
  • Strong communication skills (written and oral)
  • Team player as well as self-motivated


Highly desirable

  • Ability to read Dutch
  • Experience of supervising volunteers 
  • Excellent subject knowledge of the Holocaust and Nazi era

This is a fixed term post for one year with an annual salary of £25,000.
