Places of Oblivion - Places of Remembrance. The Present - the Past

The conference entitled Places of Oblivion - Places of Remembrance. The Present - the Past is organised by the Historical Museum of the City of Kraków as part of a cyclical museum event “Victims of the Gestapo - Days of Remembrance” in 2018. Its’ objective is not only an attempt at summarising several decades of work and experiences of the Historical Museum of the City of Krakow, as well as other institutions and non-governmental organisations related to the care for places of oblivion/ remembrance, restoration, cherishing the memory about places of painful past, but primarily about people.

We would like to become acquainted with the experiences and accomplishments of researchers, scientists, activists and institutions, as well as decision-makers who are involved in and co-decide about the present and the past of places of this type, commemorating victims of the two totalitarian systems in years 1939 and 1945 and 1956.

The Museum is a venue for dialogue where various experiences and manners of interpreting the history and memory meet. In relation to the ongoing expansion of our activity associated with places of oblivion/ remembrance, the need for reflection and finding inspiration and distance necessary for further research and development is growing.

The most important area that the Museum was dealing with in the last decade was the WWII history and, in a much more limited dimension, the years of terror during the Stalin era. Thus, the conference entitled Places of Oblivion - Places of Remembrance. The Present - the Past focuses on the issues pertaining to both totalitarian periods. It was designed as an invitation for dialogue and exchange of experiences among people who directly and indirectly deal with people and places that are still affected by the war.

The participation in this interdisciplinary conference will provide an opportunity for presenting your work, sharing your experiences and meeting other researchers. We would like to invite researchers and scientists, historians, anthropologists, sociologists, psychologists, museologists, social activists, politicians and people who take care of places of oblivion/ remembrance in the above-mentioned period.

Apart from information on the website about the conference, an additional notice will be sent to the institutions handling such issues, as well as persons with whom we cooperated in the past.

Please submit your paper proposals via a form to the e-mail address created on the website to service the conference.
