Memorial museums at the sites of concentration camps and their satellite camps document the central camp system of the SS and Gestapo persecution apparatus.
The prisoners who are commemorated there belonged to the resistance or to fringe groups in German society. During the course of the Second World War, the vast majority of prisoners consisted of people who had been deported from the occupied countries.
The exhibitions in the concentration camp memorial museums address these developments at the historical camp sites, the experiences and suffering of the inmates, and the forced labour they had to perform. The organisation of the crimes committed by the SS, as well as other responsible authorities and organisations, is documented in the exhibitions. Because of the origin of the victims, these sites are also international cemeteries.
The Nazi history of a large city and the persecution of regime opponents and minorities in this region are also often presented.
