Our long-term partnership with Thomas Lutz began soon after the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum opened in April 1993. In the 30 years since then, he has been a close friend, partner and advisor to our institution in multiple ways over the decades. His expertise in history, memorialization and museology and his commitment to the future have made him a unique leader of and contributor to our field.

Thomas’ vision of bringing German museum and memorial representatives together in a regular exchange has helped to establish the key professional network of memorial museums across Germany, and increasingly across Europe. It alsodeepened our trans-Atlantic connections. We were pleased to welcome him in 2007 as a visiting fellow at our Mandel Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies, and most recently, in 2021, he was a speaker for the Museum on International Holocaust Remembrance Day.

At all times, Thomas’ knowledge, generosity, dedication and kindness made working with him enjoyable and productive. It is with great pleasure that we join his friends and colleagues in wishing him all the best and thanking him for his exceptional legacy to the cause of Holocaust remembrance and education.
