Auschwitz Jewish Center Foundation.A BRIDGE TO HISTORY .JUNE 26, 2006 - AUGUST 18, 2006..A GRADUATE STUDY PROGRAM UNDER THE PATRONAGE OF .THE UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF STATE...The Student Scholars:.Eight Student Scholars will be selected based on demonstrated superior academic abilities as well as individual initiative and leadership skills. Nomination of students with interest in Holocaust studies, genocide prevention, human rights or social improvement and of all ethnic and religious affiliations are strongly encouraged...The Program:.After a brief orientation in New York City, the scholars will travel to the Auschwitz Jewish Center in Oswiecim (Auschwitz), Poland, for eight week in the summer, where they will undertake meaningful projects whereby they study the Holocaust and pre-War Jewish life as well as create educational programs for use in the Center throughout the year. When they arrive in Oswiecim, the Student Scholars attend a two-day intensive program at the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum where they tour the camp and learn how to use the archives, collections, publications and educational departments. The Student Scholars engage in sessions with Polish and German students, which help to dispel deeply rooted stereotypes and prejudices that exist in the respective societies of the participants, while at the same time promoting the creation of lasting cross-cultural relationships. The Student Scholars are taken on organized trips throughout Poland to explore the country’s rich Jewish heritage and meet with local Jewish and non-Jewish leaders to learn about pre-war Jewish life and the status of the Jewish community today, as well as what occurred during the Nazi occupation and the Communist years. ..While in Poland, each Student Scholar is required to work on three independent projects that are designed to facilitate personal learning experience. Projects are carried out under the supervision of the Center’s staff and can involve designing educational programs and workshops, planning events, creating new educational materials, doing scholarly research, developing exhibitions and conducting interviews with Polish Holocaust survivors. Upon returning home, the Student Scholars must create a Holocaust education lesson plan, lecture, or workshop that they will use when they visit high schools, colleges, community centers, etc. ..Nominations:.Nominees must have completed their undergraduate degree by June 2006. Nominations of potential Scholars will be accepted only from the President, Vice President, Dean or a Department Chairperson at the applicant’s university..
