The International Committee of Memorial Museums for the Remembrance of Victims of Public Crimes
(IC MEMO) was established in July 2001 as a new International Committee within the International Council for Museums (ICOM). Memorial Museums embrace the classical museum functions to preserve, document and research, but also serve as places of remembrance. They are frequently located at the original historical sites, or at places chosen by survivors of such crimes for the purposes of commemoration
IC MEMO wants to facilitate and enhance the communication between staff members working at Memorial Museums that deal with victims of State, socially determined and ideologically motivated crimes.
The IC MEMO board focuses on the following topics:
- Preservation of authentic sites and buildings
- Acquisition and conservation of collections
- Exchange of experiences between Memorial Museums, especially on the field of commemoration and education
- International standards for organizing and describing records and objects
- Cooperation on the fields of exhibition, acquisition, education and documentation
